Read MoreThe Como Heritage and Environment Trail (the Trail) is a 4.2 km circuit through the local streets and bushland of Como that highlights local features and traditional stories relating to the area’s local history.
The Trail traverses around the streets of Como and points out many well-known and not so well-known historic stories.
Featured along the Trail are eight interpretative stories that detail the history and development of the Como Pleasure Grounds, the Rail Bridge and Station, the Como Hotel and Scylla Bay Oval. There are also two indigenous stories from the local Dharawal tribe that have a local connection with the Georges and Woronora Rivers. The stories have survived thousands of years and come from the Alcheringa (Dreamtime) of the local indigenous people and have been endorsed by the La Perouse and Gandangara Local Land Councils. Several local flora and fauna species have been highlighted in the Virtual Tour that you may see along your walk in Paruna Reserve.
Henry Lawson (17.6.1867- 2 9.1922), one of Australia’s finest writers, spent time in Como and we have captured a snippet of his time here with a plaque in Henry Lawson Reserve in Wolger Street.
The links below allow you to download and print the map, take a virtual tour of the Trail, read the entire Heritage Report prepared in 2017 or look at the fabulous photos we have uncovered during the research.
We owe much gratitude to Julie Baker of Como for allowing her family’s private photograph collection to be used in the photo gallery.
The majority of the Trail has been classified as an easy walk (grade 1-2), with the sections through Paruna Reserve classified as grades 3 and 4 meaning uneven surfaces, loose surfaces, steep grades. The very northern end of Como Parade is classified as grade 3 due to its steep hill.
Come prepared, bring food and water, plan where the toilet stops are and enjoy the breathtaking scenery along the way
We hope you enjoy the Como Heritage and Environment Trail.
