The use of parks is part of the Australian way of life. With over 850 parks and reserves under Sutherland Shire Council's management, we’re constantly investing in their development and maintenance for the benefit of our Shire residents. Parks enhance our natural environment and create recreational spaces for families, youth and the elderly, as well as our beloved pets, to socialise and feel a sense of community.
As part of council's 2017-18 environmental strategy, we’re expected to complete by next month:
Barden Ridge Park
150 Old Illawarra Road, Barden Ridge
Our much anticipated Barden Ridge Park will include a playground with a dinky and scooter track and all abilities playground equipment - a play fort, swings and climbing net. Now residents will be able to take their kids for an intense afternoon play or use its new picnic facilities and open lawns this summer.
Woolooware Bay Shared Pathway
Alexander Avenue and Atkinson Road, Taren Point
We’ve been transforming the foreshore of Woolooware Bay since 2003 through staged construction of the Woolooware Bay Shared Pathway network. This shared pathway forms part of the Botany Bay Trail which connects the larger Sydney Metropolitan Regional Trails framework. Now in the last stage of construction, this is the final link that will connect the local route between Shorebird Reserve, Alexander Avenue and Atkinson Road, Taren Point. This area is an important link of a greater foreshore trail from La Perouse to Kurnell that gives public access to previously closed foreshore land.
Residents will have a pedestrian and cycling pathway with multiple lookout platforms for uninterrupted views across Botany Bay and access to picnic, bike racks and seating facilities. We’ve ensured this project protects and enhances our endangered migratory birds (we’ll have a sand island for bird sanctuary), saltmarsh and aquatic ecologies, as well as our 1950s Heritage Oyster Jetty.
At Council, we understand the need for ecologically sustainable development to ensure the health, diversity and productivity of our environment and boost a resident’s quality of life. Get ready this summer for new park life adventures.
