WHAT TO DO IN THE SUTHERLAND SHIRE

The Sutherland Shire is a destination with pristine beaches, breath-taking national parks and superb arts & heritage experiences.   Visit for the day or stay for a few to enjoy the beautiful Sutherland Shire.

Nature & Outdoor activities

- Walk Cronulla Esplanade, follow the coastline walk to explore Cronulla’s beaches & ocean pools. It’s the only beach in Sydney accessible by train.

- Visit Kamay Botany Bay National Park – Learn about Aboriginal culture, see Captain Cook’s Landing Place and watch the whale’s at Cape Solander (June – November)

- Take the iconic wooden ferry from Cronulla to Bundeena or book a scenic lunch cruise with Cronulla & National Park Ferry Cruises.

- Visit Royal National Park, the world's second-oldest national park. 

- In Bundeena, walk the Jibbon Loop Track or paddle along the magnificent Port Hacking River with Bundeena Kayaks.

- Join Cronulla Whale Watching to see these amazing creatures in their natural habitat (May – Oct).

- Visit the EG Waterhouse National Camellia Gardens. One of its kind in NSW, with The Jade Teahouse famous for its scones & tea.

- Joseph Banks Native Plants Reserve is devoted entirely to Australian native plants with four kilometres of sealed walking paths.

Arts & Culture activities

• Discover Aboriginal carvings and middens on the Jibbon Loop Track near Bundeena.

• Explore the Bundeena Maianbar Art Trail on the first Sunday of every month.

• Visit Hazelhurst Arts Centre and café, Gymea.

• Visit Sydney Tramway Museum, Australia’s oldest tramway museum.

HOW TO GET HERE

The Sutherland Shire is located 25 kilometres south of Sydney’s CBD and is easily accessible by car, rail and bus. Most international and domestic airlines fly into Sydney Airport, from there it’s a short 30 minute drive, making this a convenient destination to visit.

AIR

From Sydney airport it is an easy 30-minute drive south, past Botany Bay.

RAIL

From Sydney CBD you can access the Shire by rail from the Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra lines. Visitors from the south, including Wollongong and Nowra, can travel via the South Coast line.

ROAD

From the north you can access the Shire via the Princes Highway over Tom Ugly’s Bridge at Sylvania, Rocky Point Road over Captain Cook Bridge at Taren Point, or on Alfords Point Road at Illawong. From the south you’ll enter via the Princes Highway through Waterfall.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

You can plan your trip using the public transport info line by calling 131500 or visiting their website. Trains operate every 15-30

minutes along the Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra line. A range of bus services are also available.
